Causes of negative cultures

Negative cultures occur in 3 to 20% of cases, usually as a result of prior antibiotic treatment. Other possible causes include:

  • fastidious streptococci and anaerobes
  • Coxiella burnetti, Q fever, requires complement fixation tests
  • Chlamydia - requires immunofluorescence or complement fixation
  • Candida - requires antigen test
