Defibrillation procedure

The procedure for defibrillation involves:

  • applying conductive material
  • turning on defibrillator
  • checking position of the pads
  • selecting energy level on the defibrillator
  • charging the electrodes
  • placing electrodes and applying pressure - 11 kg or 25 pounds is optimum
  • giving the command to clear the bed
  • performing a visual sweep to ensure no-one is touching the bed
  • discharging the pads

Immediately after any shock the pulse should be checked before looking at the ECG trace.

The conductive pads should be changed after four to six shocks.
