Acute embolic obstruction of the blood supply to an organ results in immediate pain, followed by numbness and loss of function.
The embolus is usually thrombus which has formed over an atherosclerotic plaque or myocardial infarct.
Where there is doubt as to whether the event is embolic then angiography is indicated to ensure that the appropriate treatment is given.
