Decision to treat is based on a number of factors, including:

  • haematocrit - most thresholds are at around 70%
  • clinical manifestations of polycythaemia - ie hyperviscosity syndrome
  • clinical condition of the infant

The criteria vary from unit to unit.

The treatment of choice is a partial exchange transfusion.
