Periodontitis can be prevented by regular and careful brushing, flossing and scaling. Scaling aims to remove as much plaque and calculus as possible from periodontal pockets and from the exposed root. The deposits are never completely eradicated, but, subgingival organisms are reduced in number, inflammatory signs subside, and teeth are more likely to be retained.
