The right ventricle's relations to other chambers:

  • to left of the right atrium, separated by the atrioventricular groove externally
  • to the right and anterior to the left ventricle
  • anteroinferior to the left atrium

Posteriorly and to the left is the interventricular septum. This projects into the cavity of the right ventricle and causes the anterior wall and septal wall to be larger than the posterior (inferior) surface of the chamber.

In terms of surfaces of the heart, the right ventricle contributes to the:

  • sternocostal surface:
    • forms the majority of this surface
    • slightly convex
    • anteriorly on the right side are pericardium and chest wall. To the left and from deep to superficial are:
      • pericardium
      • left pleura
      • edge of anterior border of left lung
      • thoracic cage
  • diaphragmatic surface:
    • forms the anterior section of the inferior surface
    • inferiorly is pericardium and then the central tendon of the diaphragm
