Two-dimensional images are built up by scanning the ultrasound beam across the heart. The resulting echoes are displayed as a fan-shaped tomograph on a cathode-ray tube.
Each second between 20 and 50 cross-sections can be built up and presented as a moving picture. A complete picture of the heart can be built up from multiple views in several different orientations.
