The clinical features vary according to the type of ichthyosis present. In general, large amounts of scale accumulate on the cutaneous surface similar to fish scale (Greek ikhthus meaning fish). In the more common forms of this disorder, scaling often occurs on the trunk and extensor surfaces of the limbs.
The inherited forms usually develop during childhood; some may be present at birth.
The disorder is usually lifelong and may become severely handicapping.
