Interferon alpha

Interferon alpha is a subgroup of the interferon peptides containing at least 8 members. It originates from a variety of leukocytes.

Its in vitro functions include:

  • production of an antiviral state
  • cytostatic for tumour cells
  • stimulation of B lymphocytes
  • inhibition of T lymphocytes
  • pyretic

It may be used to treat Kaposi's sarcoma, hairy cell leukaemia and hepatitis. It has produced a minimal response rate in advanced renal cell carcinoma.
