Diabetes mellitus may be primary or secondary.

Primary diabetes can be divided into:

  • insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)
  • non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM)
  • maturity onset diabetes of the young (MODY) a subset of NIDDM with unique features
