Growth hormone is secreted by the anterior pituitary in response to growth hormone releasing hormone - GRH - from the hypothalamus. Its release is inhibited by the action of somatostatin from the hypothalamus.
Its action is to stimulate the liver and other tissues to produce somatomedins which promote growth. Growth hormone is also an anabolic hormone and diabetogenic exerting an anti-insulin effect in muscle and increasing hepatic glucose release.
