An inflammatory nodule can be seen developing with an overlying pustule through which the hair surfaces (1).
The lesion enlarges rapidly and is fluctuant. It eventually 'points' at the surface and spontaneously discharges pus. Once the pus has discharged and the necrotic tissue has been shed, the lesion heals spontaneously.
