This is an oedematous area on the forehead, usually a short distance above the upper limit of the frontal sinus, that very rarely complicates frontal sinusitis in adults, or maxillary sinusitis in children. It occurs only in diploeic bone.
Untreated sinusitis produces thrombophlebitis and subsequently, osteomyelitis.
Treatment is by surgical drainage through non-diploeic bone e.g. the floor of the frontal sinus or the medial wall of the maxillary antrum.
