Oral cholecystograms, provided the liver function is normal, may be indicated:

  • to assess gallbladder function and contraction

  • to determine the number and size of stones when ultrasound has been unsuccessful

  • adenomyomatosis and cholesterolosis may be demonstrated on oral cholecystography. These conditions may cause gallbladder pain in the absence of gallstones

This investigation is of little use if there is jaundice, hepatic failure or intestinal malabsorption.
