Glyceraldehyde phosphate dehydrogenase is an enzyme in the glycolytic pathway that converts glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate into 3-phosphoglycerolyl phosphate. Phosphate is required as a co-factor.
1 molecule of NAD is reduced for each molecule of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate oxidized; hence, 2 NADH are produced from 1 molecule of glucose substrate. NADH is used as an energy source in the electron carrier chain.
The same enzyme catalyzes the reverse reaction during gluconeogenesis.
