Haemorrhoidectomy is the definitive surgical treatment for haemorrhoids.
The piles are excised together with any surrounding skin tags and the dissection is advanced to the neck of the pile in the submucosa, i.e. excision is of haemorrhoidal mass, together with overlying mucosa and some skin. Skin and mucosal bridges are preserved between each group of excised piles to prevent the serious late complication of anal stenosis.
