Follow-up and tests of cure

  • follow-up should be offered at about 2-3 weeks after commencing treatment - this is to check adherence to treatment and risk of reinfection, and for contact tracing
  • tests of cure are not routinely indicated following treatment with standard regimens, as long as partners are known to have been treated and adherence to therapy is likely
  • however, in pregnancy, tests of cure are desirable
    • due to higher positive chlamydia tests after treatment in pregnancy, attributed to either less efficacious treatment regime, non compliance or re-infection, it is recommended that pregnant woman must have a test of cure 5 weeks after completing therapy, 6 weeks later if given azithromycin.
    • doxycycline and ofloxacin are contraindicated (1)
