Human cyclospora are round or ovoid (7-9 micrometres). Light microscopy reveals morula (mulberry)-like refractile spheres containing clusters of refractile globules enclosed within a membrane. Acid-fast staining reveals varible-dark red acid-fast organisms and unstained transparent spheres. Ultraviolet epifluorescence microscopy causes the organisms to autofluoresce (blue). This organism may be mistaken for cryptosporidium.
