The submucosa of the oesophagus largely consists of areolar connective tissue interspersed with:

  • blood vessels
  • lymphatics
  • nerve fibres
  • mucus glands projecting onto the oesophageal surface by a fine duct; tend to be concentrated at the superior and inferior ends of the oesophagus
