A re-entrant tachycardia results from a sustained circuit of depolarisation, usually consisting of:

  • anterograde conduction down the relatively slow AV node
  • conduction to the ventricles along the His-Purkinje system
  • retrograde conduction up the relatively rapid accessory pathway

The result is usually a regular narrow complex tachycardia.
