The patient should be encouraged to check that the IUCD remains in place. The best time to do this is regularly in the first month and then after each period.
If the threads cannot be felt, or the patient can feel the end of the IUCD - like a 'matchstick' - then immediate medical consultation is indicated. In the meantime, an alternative contraceptive method such as the condom should be used.
The IUCD should also be checked if the patient's partner can feel the threads and intercourse is uncomfortable. The threads may need trimming, or the IUCD may need to be removed.
Patients may use tampons as usual during periods.
Regular check-ups are advised - within 6 and 12 weeks of fitting and then at least yearly.
The type of IUCD will dictate the frequency of replacement. Inactive devices may be left indefinitely in the absence of symptoms.
