In acute onset schizophrenia the symptoms begin clearly over a few days, and usually following an obvious stress. The symptoms tend to be florid, with delusions, hallucinations or thought disorder present.
The main differential in the diagnosis with such an onset is between an organic state (e.g. drug-induced) and an affective disorder (notably mania).
