The clinical features of an inhalation injury below the larynx develop over two discernable time courses. Immediately there may be:

  • restlessness
  • confusion
  • hypoxia progressing to
  • death

Alternatively, there may be a pattern of features with later onset over 12 hours to a week:

  • increased hypoxia
  • pulmonary oedema secondary to adult respiratory distress syndrome
  • respiratory failure
