Lucio's phenomenon is seen in cases of leprosy in Mexico and Central America and occurs where lepromatous leprosy is associated with an endarteritis which results in skin ulceration. The resultant ulcers are large with undermined edges and necrotic bases. Smears from the bases generally show large numbers of acid-fast bacilli.
This condition is treated with wide surgical excision with skin grafts. The ulcers will not be cured by chemotherapy alone.
