Treatment of salmonellosis

Salmonella spp (nontyphoidal)

  • antibiotic therapy is indicated only in high-risk children to reduce the risk of bacteraemia and extra-intestinal focal infections
  • antibiotics recommended to treat adults include a fluoroquinolone (e.g., ciprofloxacin) or azithromycin depending on the local susceptibility patterns and travel history (1)
  • preferred therapy – ceftriaxone
  • alternative agents - azithromycin, ciprofloxacin (1)

Salmonella typhi

  • preferred therapy – third-generation cephalosporins
  • alternative agents - chloramphenicol (1)

The typical antibiotic course is for 3 to 7 days or until after fevers resolve (2)

Salmonellosis is a notifiable disease
