Scheuermann's disease is twice as common in girls than boys and starts at puberty. The teenager is usually otherwise fit and well, although s/he may complain of backache, rounding of the shoulders or fatigue.
Eventually, a significant thoracic kyphosis develops, mobility is reduced, and there is a compensatory increase in the normal lumbar lordosis. Osteoarthritic changes may occur in later life.
