Dihydropyridines inhibit the transport of calcium into cells via L-type calcium channels.
Their principle actions are in vascular smooth muscle, particularly arterioles, where they produce a decrease in peripheral vascular resistance. They also affect normal coronary arteries causing dilatation and preventing spasm.
