In view of the difficulty in reaching a firm diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson's disease, it is advisable that the diagnosis is made by a neurologist or geriatrician with a special interest in movement disorders (1)...similarly, it is better for the GP not to treat Parkinson's disease but to await specialist advice.
The management of Parkinson's disease is medical; only in rare circumstances is surgery considered.
Patients should have regular access to physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech and language therapy (1).
