Oxoglutarate dehydrogenase

Oxoglutarate dehydrogenase converts 2-oxoglutarate and coenzyme A into succinyl-CoA and carbon dioxide. NADH is generated from NAD.

The molecule of NADH is capable of generating 3 molecules of ATP via the electron transport chain.

Molecularly, it is a large enzyme complex which requires a number of co-factors:

  • thiamine pyrophosphate
  • coenzyme A
  • FAD
  • NAD
  • lipoamide

A dietary deficiency of any of these reduces the efficacy of the enzyme; clinically, conditions like beri beri result.

Generally, the reaction is saturated and hence it is one of the targets for regulation of flux through the pathway.
