The dietary protein requirements after a major burn are increased. This may be difficult to deliver with a satisfactory energy intake in extensive burns. The ratio or protein to calories must increase from a normal 1:300 to approximately 1:150.

For patients who can tolerate an oral diet, this can be given as a diet rich in eggs and dairy products. Ways of supplementing the protein load include mixing skimmed milk with ordinary milk and making ice cream, eggs and glucose milk shakes.
