Colostrum is the breast milk secreted in the first week. It is especially high in protein from immunoglobulins and has a high concentration of lymphocytes.

If a mother is unwilling or unable to breast feed her baby then she should be encouraged to attempt breast feeding during the first week in order to provide colostrum to her baby.
