Macrosomia is the excessive growth of a foetus, with enlargement of all organs.
It can be detected on ultrasound scanning by measuring the abdominal circumference from the 30th week onwards.
Classically, macrosomic or large-for-dates foetuses are the result of poorly controlled diabetes mellitus although other rarer causes are documented.
