Causes include:

  • reduced production of amniotic fluid
    • failing placental function
    • bilateral renal agenesis
    • posterior urethral valves
  • increased losses of amniotic fluid, as in prolonged rupture of membranes

It is common in pregnancies which have progressed many weeks beyond term.
