Macroscopic collapse may be prevented in the early stages of this condition by a combination of weight-relief, splintage and surgical decompression of bone.

If bone collapse has occurred it may be treated by osteotomy or by procedures designed to transfer stress through an undamaged area.

If articular destruction has occurred then the condition is treated in a similar manner to osteoarthritis.

These measures have been discussed with respect to the lower limb. Often no treatment of the upper limb is required.
