Cafe au lait spots are brown cutaneous macules which may be present at birth and, if numerous, are strongly suggestive of the diagnosis of neurofibromatosis or Albright's syndrome. The incidence of single lesions is high and of no significance - a patient is allowed up to four patches of less than 0.5cm diameter, but no patches greater than 1.5cm diameter.
