Consent, written or verbal, must always be obtained at the time of each vaccination. Bringing a child for vaccination when invited implies consent if no reservation is expressed.
A child under 16 may give consent provided he or she fully understands the benefits and risks involved but should be encouraged to involve a parent/guardian in the decision if possible. Where a child under 16 who fully understands the benefits and risks involved wishes to refuse the immunisation, that wish should be respected.
If fitness and suitability cannot be established, immunisation should be deferred.
