Cow's milk intolerance (causing constipation in children)

  • a randomised, double-blind, cross-over trial found that fourty-four children (out of a total of sixty-five) referred to a specialist centre with chronic idiopathic constipation responded to the exclusion of cow's milk.

  • in some young children, cow's milk intolerance may result in constipation by causing painful rectal or anal lesions.

  • chronic idiopathic constipation in young children is a common problem in general practice and a two-week trial of cow's milk exclusion may be a worthwhile management option.
