This is an example of a reflex that appears at six to nine months and persists throughout life.
If the child is held in the ventral position and then suddenly lowered towards the ground then the child extends his arms as if to protect him from falling.
This reflex is absent or incomplete in children with cerebral palsy because of the strong flexor tone in these children.
