A tiny dimple in the cleft between the buttocks is common, and of no importance if the base of the dimple is clearly visible (1). An associated abnormality of the spinal cord may be indicated if the dimple is:

  • accompanied by a tuft of hair, or,
  • the sinus is deep and the floor of the sinus is not visible, or,
  • if there is a Z shaped deviation of the buttock cleft
