A meningocoele is a cystic CSF filled cavity, lined with meninges but devoid of neural tissue, and protruding from the unfused spine. It usually arises in the lumbosacral area. It has a good prognosis - the defect is repaired in the first few days of life and neurological deficits are few - some patients experience bladder dysfunction or minor foot problems. Follow up is important because the neurological problems may develop with growth.
A meningocoele may also appear at the root of the nose or as an intranasal swelling resembling a nasal polyp.
