In Patau's syndrome, the risk of recurrence is low provided one of the parents is not a carrier of a balanced transformation.

Non-disjunction at either the first or second meiotic division in either parent may cause trisomy 13. In about 20% of cases, one parent is a translocation carrier.

There is antenatal diagnosis available for Patau's syndrome.
