Presentation is usually as a discrete, firm, non-tender and highly mobile nodule within the breast. Small lesions may slip away from the examining hand during palpation giving rise to their description as "breast mice." A few patients may present with multiple fibroadenomas.
Diagnosis may be made with a combination of clinical assessment, ultrasonography and fine needle aspiration cytology. Fibroadenomas in older patients may calcify and give characteristic mammographic appearances.
