SEGMENT NUMBER TEN
The posterior basal bronchopulmonary segment of the right inferior lobe is supplied by the posterior basal segmental bronchus, a branch of the right inferior lobar bronchus.
This segment contributes significantly to the posterior, medial and diaphragmatic surfaces of the right inferior lobe. Posteriorly, its margins are the level of the tenth rib inferiorly to the diaphragmatic surface of the lung. It forms the region on the mediastinal surface of the lung that is directly posterior to the cardiac impression and hence, it is posterior to the medial basal bronchopulmonary segment. It forms the posteromedial portion of the diaphragmatic surface of the lower lobe.
Laterally, the lateral basal bronchopulmonary segment forms the adjoining surface. Superiorly, the posterior segment is capped by the superior bronchopulmonary segment of the right inferior lobe. Alternatively, in roughly half of the population there lies a subapical lobe intermediate between posterior basal and superior bronchopulmonary segments.
