The most common and well characterised forms of thyroiditis are:

  • Hashimoto's or autoimmune thyroiditis
  • De Quervains or subacute granulomatous thyroiditis
  • subacute lymphocytic or painless thyroiditis
  • Riedel's thyroiditis

Less common and less characterised forms are:

  • acute or infective thyroiditis
  • infiltrative thyroiditis e.g. sarcoidosis, tuberculosis
