Asystole refers to the absence of heartbeat in the absence of electrical activity from the heart; ie a flat ECG with no pulse.
Note that it is important to make the diagnosis both from the investigations - checking to see that the leads are still connected and the gain is high enough on the ECG - and from examination of the patient - ie the pulse must be absent.
