Lithium poisoning

Poisoning with lithium is mostly due to reduced excretion through:

  • dehydration due to factors such as gastroenteritis, inadequate fluid intake when travelling or hot climate
  • renal failure
  • infection
  • drug interactions (especially with thiazide diuretics)

Self-poisoning may need gastric lavage, forced diuresis or even dialysis
