Clinical diagnosis of a scaphoid fracture may be difficult as there is no deformity, bruising or crepitus around the fracture.

Suggestive features include:

  • swelling and localised tenderness of the anatomical snuffbox
  • pain on dorsiflexion of the wrist
  • pain and weakness of grip
