Stomach tumours

Benign tumours are reported in 5-25% of autopsies but are very uncommon clinical problems. Types:

  • epithelial
    • adenoma:
      • single - polyp
      • multiple - gastric polyposis
    • leiomyoma

connective tissue:

þþ fibroma

  • neurofibroma
  • vascular
    • haemangioma

Malignant:

  • primary - the most common gastric neoplasm:
    • adenocarcinoma - 95%
    • lymphoma }
    • leiomyosarcoma } 5%
    • carcinoid }
  • secondary - uncommon. Sources include:
    • as part of a generalised lymphomatosis or leukaemia
    • less commonly, spread from a breast carcinoma or malignant melanoma
    • spread from adjacent intestinal organs e.g. pancreas.
