Hesitancy is difficulty in initiating micturition. In extreme cases, several minutes may elapse before urine starts to flow. Hesitancy is most common in males. It is usually due to bladder outflow obstruction (e.g. benign prostatic hypertrophy) which prevents sufficient urine to enter the proximal urethra to initiate sphincter relaxation.
