Electrical therapy has a very important role in cardiac resuscitation, but it is important that it's use is safe and effective, and that the user realizes when to use synchronised or non-synchronised charges.
Position is usually indicated by a diagram on the defibrilator machine; a user should have been instructed in advance how to use the machine. Perhaps the most important feature to note is that the paddle labelled sternum should in fact be placed lateral to the sternum - to the patient's right - to improve conduction of the electrical discharge.
